CarnegieThetwofoundersofMellonUniversity,AndrewCarnegieandAndrewMellon,arebothpivotalfiguresinmodernAmericanhistory.CarnegiewasoneofthefourmajorchaebolsintheUnitedStatesatthebeginningofthe20thcentury.Itswealthrankedsecondintheentirehumanhistory,secondonlytotheoilkingRockefeller.AndMellon(AndrewMellon)isawell-knownAmericanbankerandtheoldparentoftheMellonFinancialConsortium.HeservedastheSecretaryoftheTreasuryfrom1921to1932,andhassurvivedthreeadministrations.TheMellonConsortiumisoneoftheworld'slargestassetmanagementcompaniesandcompletedthemergerwiththeBankofNewYorkin2007.In1900,AndrewCarnegiewrotetothegovernmentwillingtoinvest1millionpoundstobuildatechnicalcollege.Later,thegovernmentsetaside32hectaresoflandnearCholetParkandbuilttheCarnegieInstituteofTechnology.AccordingtoCarnegie'svision,thecollegewilltrainPittsburghatthetimetotraintheindustrialprofessionalsneededforthethree-yearprogram.Initiallythecollegeincludedascienceandtechnologyschool(trainingtechnologistsandassistantengineers);anartschool(trainingdesignersandcraftsmen);trainingapprenticesandskilledlaborschoolsinmanufacturingandconstruction,andatraininghousewivesandsecretariesTheMargaretMorrisonCarnegieSchool.Inthenext20years,thecollegehasalsosetupmaster'sanddoctoraltrainingcourses.
In1912,theschoolchangeditsnametoCarnegieInstituteofTechnologyandofferedafour-yeardegree.Transformationtoresearch-orientedIn1913,bankerAndrewW.Mellon(AndrewWilliamMellon)foundedtheMellonInstituteofIndustrialResearch(MellonInstituteofIndustrialResearch).
In1917,theschoolestablishedthefirstdramaschoolintheUnitedStates,providingabachelor'sdegreeindrama,dedicatedtothecultivationofartistictalents.
In1967,theboardofdirectorsofMellonCollegeandCarnegieCollegedecidedtomergethetwocollegesintooneandnamedCarnegieMellonUniversity.In1968,HugheritaMorrisonSchoolwastransformedintoacollegeofhumanitiesandsocialsciences;atthesametime,newschoolsforgraduatestudentswereestablished,suchastheSchoolofIndustrialManagement,theSchoolofCityandScience,andthenewlybuiltschoolinrecentyears.SchoolofComputerScience.Inaddition,somenewresearchcenters(suchassoftwareengineeringandroboticscenters)havealsobeenborn.
In2005,CarnegieMellonCyLabJapanwasestablished.
